Kintzel

‘Kintzel’ (C. mollissima) was grown by and named after Northern Nut Grower Association member Frank Kintzel. The tree is vigorous and large, cold hardy, and some suspect other Castanea spp. in its genetic background. The nut (13–14 g) peels easily, has a good but unusual flavor, and drops free from the burs. Two grafted ‘Kintzel’ trees (Byron 1-1 and 1-2) were in the Byron, GA, USDA orchard (Nave, 1998).
