Nanking

‘Nanking’ (C. mollissima) shares a seedlot and history with ‘Crane’ and ‘Meiling’. It ripens late season and is highly productive, sometimes overly so, such that nut size goes down. Its nut flavor (13–15 g) is average for C. mollissima nuts, and it has a reputation for producing good seedlings (Nave, 2017). However, its offspring often have an off-flavor that is difficult to describe and referred to as a carrot-type flavor. This flavor is found in many C. mollissima nuts in the eastern United States, including many Dunstan seedlings (M. Nave, personal communication) (Miller, 2003).
